Fiesta!

completely inspired by Prudent Baby's fiesta

We were working with a tight budget, and made most of the things for Zgirl's first birthday fiesta.

For food, we had all the ingredients to make your own burrito, bean dip, Spanish yellow rice, fruit salsa with cinnamon sugar tortilla chips, and guacamole. The cake was tres leches with a dulce de leche "frosting".
I made some quickie papel picados from construction paper.
Coffee filter flowers-we used the leftover dye from the cascarones to dye most of these. There are a lot of tutorials online, but we just kind of winged it. Dyed the filters, folded them into quarters and cut random shapes from the edges, and twisted them around pipe cleaners.
Birthday and name bunting, along with a pic from each month.
My mom made a quickie papel picado banner from sheets of tissue paper.
After cascarones. I didn't get any pics of them before we busted them, but they're just dyed eggs filled with confetti, and the hole is sealed with matching tissue paper. We made our own confetti using magazine pages, and the pieces we cut from the dyed coffee filters.

An after shot of the cascarone insides.

She didn't care for the cake, but she loved the ice cream!
Zboy loved the cake and ice cream.

I didn't get any great pics of Zgirl in her party dress, but it was based off this mini boden dress tutorial. The sugar skull fabric was perfect for the theme. I sized it down, added a few more rows of shirring than the tutorial asked for and some hot pink rick rack. Not my best work, but it was very fast.

We played pin the tail on the donkey, which went surprisingly well, considering it was mostly 2 and 3 year olds. Zgirl got some Gymboree bubbles (have you tried these? SO worth the $$, I found them hours later!) and everyone had fun with that.

Another PB party dress-modified

This is a dress based on the Prudent Baby party dress. I made it larger, sleeveless and a lot longer. It is completely split in the back and fastens with resin snaps.

She tried to escape the impromptu photo shoot.

Sparkly shirt from Prudent Baby tutorial

I made the lovely Zgirl a "Prudent baby party dress", although it ended up being more of a long shirt, due to a wiggly girl who won't hold still so Mama can measure her! The tutorial can be found here at the awesome blog that is Prudent Mama (if you've never seen it before, take your time and poke around-there are lots of great articles, tutorials, etc.)

I love the pattern and how it is pretty customizable-sleeve length, cuff or no cuff, hem or self fabric binding at the bottom, length of skirt, etc. The main issue I have is with how dang hard it is to get on! Having just one button (actually, I used a snap) doesn't allow enough room. This was kind of a tester anyway, to see how well it fit. She says it's a 9-12 month pattern and it fits Zgirl pretty well, with not a lot of room to grow (she's 19 or 20 lbs, fyi) I'm going to add 1/2" around the pattern when I make it again so that she can wear it for a while. I also plan to either have the back completely split and snap shut, or do it halfway, instead of just at the top like the tutorial says.

Her tutorial calls for a "scant" seam allowance, and I wasn't sure how much that was so I opted for 3/8". I didn't have any coordinating fabrics so I made it all of one type, with no cuffs. It took around 2 hours, I think. I'm in and out, tending to kids and husband, so it's hard to tell sometimes. All in all, I think it's adorable, and I plan to make more!
